Although Giannis Antetokounmpo is a basketball player, his agent wanted to cover all bases. Alex Saratsis filed for the Greek Freak trademark on behalf of the Milwaukee Bucks player. The filing for the mark was for online gambling site use, among other things.
Saratsis said that the gambling industry is evolving at a fast rate. They don’t want to be left behind. If they can use the trademark one day, then they’ll use it. If not, then they will move on. Josh Gerben, a trademark lawyer, discovered the filing of the trademark.
According to Easy Pay Per Head, the odds of Giannis using the trademark soon is high since sports betting is spreading across the US. Also, the NBA was one of the first professional sports leagues to sign a partnership deal with sports betting firms. However, players can’t associate themselves with any gambling company.
Greek Freak Trademark for Online Gambling
At present, Giannis has a trademark for the Greek Freak, which he filed in 2018. It covered the phrase on clothing items, including shirts, jackets, jerseys, and sweatshirts. Based on sportsbook pay per head sources, he also has a pending trademark for Greek Fr34k, which refers to his jersey number 34.
The pending trademark wants to protect the praise for use on various products, from nutritional supplements to cologne.
Earlier in the month, Giannis filed a lawsuit against a website selling Greek Freak items. He was asking for at least $2 million in damages. Bookie pay per head reporter said that the Bucks superstar owned the trademark. He filed the lawsuit in a New York City federal court after owners of the website failed to handle the situation in good faith.
According to a sports betting blog, Giannis sent a cease-and-desist letter to the online shop last March 27. However, the shop didn’t reach a compromise with the player.
